2006 Phenomenon 1.5L
2006 was a late vintage of moderation. Benessere experienced the latest budbreak in our 12 year history on April 1st, 2006, caused in part by an extremely wet and cool early spring. Although we had a heat spike in July, the rest of the summer was mild, which continued on into the early fall. Subsequently, harvest came later for the second year in a row. After a quick shot of early rainfall at the beginning of harvest, the weather cooperated nicely to allow the fruit to ripen fully. For the second year in a row, we achieved physical maturity of the fruit without excessive sugar or raisining.
2006 marks the seventh release of our estate blend called “Phenomenon”. The blending of Cabernet Sauvignon, Sangiovese, Merlot and Syrah is an unusual “phenomenon” in Napa Valley, although these varietals often are the basis for the finest blended Super-Tuscan wines in Italy. Our goal is to produce the finest red wine blend from our estate vineyard in St. Helena, the heart of Napa Valley. The winemaking is low-impact, with gentle handling as the key to full extraction of ripe flavors. All hand operations from picking and sorting, through punch-downs and gravity racking, affect the wine in a positive manner. 494 cases were bottled on August 26th, 2008. It received 12 months of bottle aging prior to release on September 8th, 2009.
Phenomenon is the estate red wine at Benessere! Each year we produce only enough bottles that we feel are worthy to be called “Phenomenon”. After several years of production, we have come to know that Phenomenon is a wine that is age-worthy and substantial enough to pair with the most full flavored meats and sauces, yet elegant enough to enjoy as the “instead of dessert” drink after a memorable meal. Phenomenon possesses distinct aromas of black cherry, sweet oak and soulful essences of black olive tapenade, glove leather and vanilla. On the palate, the flavors are pure, sweet and lingering with pure dark chocolate, home-made grenadine and fine-grain tannins apparent. It will age beautifully and gracefully for the next decade or more.
