2013 Moscato di Canelli (375ml)
Expectations were high for the 2013 vintage, following the success of 2012, and Mother Nature did not disappoint. Warm spring weather led to an early bloom, and the lack of rainfall during the period allowed the vines to set another large crop. The vines ripened their crop early, retaining bright acidity and beautiful flavors at relatively low sugars.
The grapes for our Moscato are grown on our Estate St. Helena vineyard in a block adjoining the Napa River. Proximity to the river increases humidity, favoring the development of Botrytis cinerea, the "noble rot" that intensifies flavors and adds candied notes to the floral and tropical fruit flavors that are the hallmark of Moscato.
The Botrytis character in this wine is pronounced, with rich, concentrated flavors of honey, candied mandarin, orange zest, white peach, mango, passion fruit, cinnamon, jasmine, honeysuckle and vanilla. The wine is viscous and it evolves seemingly without end over the long finish. This type of wine can age indefinitely, growing in complexity with time, but it is a rare soul who can hide some away to find out. Enjoy!
Enjoy on its own for dessert or with Gorgonzola, walnuts and smoke almonds, before or after your meal.
