THE VINTAGE

Expectations were high for the 2013 vintage, following the success of 2012, and Mother Nature did not disappoint. Warm spring weather led to an early bloom, and the lack of rainfall during the period allowed for good set. Moderate weather prolonged the growing season, and the grapes delivered beautiful flavors and mature tannins.

Sagrantino is always one of our last varieties to ripen but the easy, moderate conditions allowed our Sagrantino to develop the flavors and tannin structure we desired.  Ours is the only Sagrantino grown or produced in the Napa Valley!

WINEMAKING

Our Sagrantino was hand-picked and destemmed into a small open-top fermentor.  The must was gently punched down throughout the 13-day maceration.  The fermented wine went into once-used French oak barrels for 18 months maturation before bottling without fining or filtration.

TASTING NOTES

Deeply colored and vibrantly aromatic, this intriguing and complex wine offers aromas of vanilla, blackberry, blackcurrant, spice box, and rich espresso. It is tight in its youth, but shows a wonderful, grippy texture on the palate. It is long and smooth on the palate, with a savory character and ample tannins which provide structure to pair with hearty and savory foods.

PAIRINGS

This wine can be enjoyed on its own or with an assertive cheese such as gorgonzola. Enjoy with lasagna with spinach and sage or pappardelle al sugo di cinghiale (wild boar).
