Expectations were high for the 2013 vintage, following the success of 2012, and Mother Nature did not disappoint. Warm spring weather led to an early bloom, and the lack of rainfall during the period allowed the vines to set another large crop. The vines ripened their crop early, retaining bright acidity and beautiful flavors at relatively low sugars.
We produce our 100% Sangiovese from a variety of clonal selections, enhancing the complexity of the finished wine. In the winery we handle the fruit gently, destemming without crushing the berries. We adjust our cap management techniques—punchdowns and pumpovers—to get the desired structure and color without overextraction.
This wine is a brilliant, bright garnet color offering classic Sangiovese aromas of black cherry with hints of leather and spice. It opens to reveal a complex interplay of fruit and spice on the palate with strawberry, rhubarb, cherry, cedar and sandalwood leading to a savory spiced finish.
Enjoy now or cellar for 3 to 5 years for further complexity.
Sip it on a summer day alongside prosciutto and melon, or figs stuffed with goat cheese and wrapped in bacon. Enjoy with grilled chicken with lemon and black pepper, or a roasted Portobello mushroom with garlic and olive oil!
