2014 Johns Promise 1.5L
The 2014 harvest got an early start due to warm, wet weather in February and March. The wetness was a relief as we entered our third year of drought. The precipitation filled the soil profile, allowing the vines to get a healthy start to the season.
The rest of the season progressed dreamily, with few extremes of temperature. Harvest was on track to get an early start—and it did—but cool mornings in August slowed down ripening, giving the grapes more time to develop flavors.
The Cabernet Sauvignon and Aglianico in this blend were harvested and fermented separately. After a brief cold soak each lot fermented in 10-14 days. The wine was gently pressed off the skin to age in French oak barrels, 50% new barrels for the Cabernet and 25% new for the Aglianico.
Deep ruby with an almost black core, this gorgeous wine exudes serious savory aromas of cedar, black olive, blackberry and coffee. Blackberry and cedar persist on the palate along with hints of mocha, black cherry and raspberry. Silky tannins lead to a long, complex finish with lingering fruit flavors.
This wine will pair well with savory, well seasoned food, such as mixed vegetables off the grill such as porcini, eggplant, red onion and squash, perhaps served alongside lamb or steak medallions. Try with an unusual Italian sauce such as cacio e pepe (cheese and pepper), Genovese sauce
