Aglianico (all-yee-on-ee-co) is a dark-skinned Italian variety grown in the Campania region around Naples. It produces a dark ruby wine with powerful aromas and flavors and significant tannin. There are few acres planted in California and much of it comes to Benessere. The wine is fermented warm with frequent pumpovers and aged in new and used barrels for 18 to 20 months before bottling. The wine is brilliant medium deep garnet in color, with generous aromas of red and black fruits, dark spices and suggestions of pancetta and dry-cured olives. Entry in medium tart, mouthfeel is supple, and texture is slightly grainy, carrying the ripe and earthy flavors to a long, toasty finish. Our 2009 Aglianico has the classic profile of the variety, supple, juicy, balanced and sturctured for aging. Try it with pappardelle bolognese or the California equivalent of Tuscan beefsteak.
