2012 Collins Holystone Zinfandel
2012 was a glorious growing season throughout the Napa Valley. An early budbreak and moderate temperatures led to a long, slow ripening period, allowing outstanding flavors to develop at relatively low Brix. We harvested at ideal ripeness grapes with ideal color and mature, silky tannins.
Grapes for our Old Vines Zinfandel come from our long-time neighbors on Big Tree Road, Kathy and Bill Collins. These ancient gnarly vines, planted on a cobbly hump in 1923, have been lovingly farmed by the Collins family for the last forty-plus years. This year’s crop was hand-picked and gently destemmed without crushing, and then fermented in open-top fermenters for three weeks, receiving two or three punch-downs per day. The wine matured in seasoned French oak barrels after pressing, where it aged for 16 months before bottling in April, 2014.
Our 2012 Old Vine Zinfandel is a deep, dense, intense wine. It shows blueberry, red and purple flowers, lavender, vanilla and clove on the nose, and rich, dark fruit--blackberry, mulberry and French plum--on the palate. The fruit flavors are enhanced by a mulled spice character that persists through the long finish. Bright acidity makes this deeply flavored wine as refreshing as it is delicious.
Enjoy this wine with focaccia topped with fig, gorgonzola and caramelized red onion. Grilled and seared meats, spicy red sauces Bellwether Pepato sheep's milk cheese with black peppercorn kernels also pair beautifully. The depth of flavors in this wine make it very easy to pair and sure to please.
