Vintage 2007 began early, and without the cool spring and summer, harvest would have begun even earlier. Uncharacteristic for Napa Valley, the rain stopped after mid-March. A heat spike around Labor Day hinted at a quick harvest, but the balance of the season was unusually cool, allowing for full flavor development and unrushed harvesting and fermentation. This year marked the second light crop in a row for Napa Valley.
Modeled after the famous proprietary wines of Tuscany, Phenomenon blends the character of Cabernet Sauvignon and the suppleness of Merlot with the brightness of Sangiovese and the structure of Syrah, all grown on Benessere’s Saint Helena estate. Fewer than 400 cases of this rich and distinctive wine were made this year. Each component was fermented and oak-aged separately to bring out its essential character and then blended. It received two years of bottle age before release.
2007 Phenomenon is gemlike brilliant garnet. Aromas of pure cherry and wild berries burst from the glass, followed as the wine airs by subtle scents of dark spice, savory herbs and sweet oak. At first taste, bright red and black fruit flavors are layered on firm tannins and moderately full body; complex tones of leather, licorice, figs and chocolate follow, carrying on to the finish. Drink now, but save some for the cellar!
