The 2015 growing season started early in Napa Valley. As California entered its fourth year of drought, we were fortunate to receive spring rains sufficient to fill our reservoir and saturate the soil. Consistent sun and warmth throughout the growing season led to an early crop of high-quality grapes.
Our Sagrantino was hand-picked and destemmed into a small open-top fermentor. The must was gently punched down throughout the 13-day maceration. The fermented wine went into once-used French oak barrels for 18 months maturation before bottling without fining or filtration.
Blackish red in color, our Sagrantino displays enticing aromas of mysterious spices, black fruits, exotic fruits, and a hint of the forest. This wine has a massive structure and huge tannins that are tight, but not aggressive. On the palate, it delivers flavors of black plum, blackberry, black cherry, dragon fruit and a hint of star fruit, along with cedar and roasted coffee. This wine is delicious right now, and it will grow in complexity as it evolves in your glass.
This wine can be enjoyed on its own or with an assertive cheese such as gorgonzola. Enjoy with double cut pork chops, grilled lamb or Umbrian style steak.
