Expectations were high for the 2013 vintage, following the success of 2012, and Mother Nature did not disappoint. Warm spring weather led to an early bloom, and the lack of rainfall during the period allowed the vines to set another large crop. The vines ripened their crop early, retaining bright acidity and beautiful flavors at relatively low sugars.
The Cabernet Sauvignon and Aglianico in this blend were harvested and fermented separately. After a brief cold soak each lot fermented in 10-14 days. The wine was gently pressed off the skin to age in French oak barrels, 50% new barrels for the Cabernet and 25% new for the Aglianico.
Deep ruby with an almost black core, this gorgeous wine is redolent of blueberry, blackberry pie, huckleberry, velvety rose petal and candied violet. The vibrant wine is beautifully integrated and on the palate offers flavors of blackberry, espresso bean, dark chocolate, vanilla, sandalwood and exotic spices. Silky tannins lead to a long, complex finish.
This wine will pair well with savory, well seasoned food, such as mixed vegetables off the grill such as porcini, eggplant, red onion and squash, perhaps served alongside lamb or steak medallions. Try with an unusual Italian sauce such as cacio e pepe (cheese and pepper), Genovese sauce (onions, carrots and celery), or salsa verde (parsley, capers, garlic, anchovies, onions and olive oil).
