Despite the ongoing statewide drought, Napa Valley received close to average rainfall in 2015-16. More than 12” fell in March 2016, ensuring that the vines had ample water as they emerged from dormancy. The growing season was considerably cooler than in the previous two vintages, allowing us to harvest beautifully ripened grapes at the end of a long growing season.
Our estate Black Glass Vineyard Zinfandel takes its name from the obsidian that surfaces in the vineyard after each rain. In the winery we treat our Zinfandel as gently as our Sangiovese. We ferment in open top tanks and gently punch down twice each day. When the fermentation is complete the wine matures in neutral French oak barrels.
Brilliant, limpid garnet in color with aromas of crushed blackberry, lilac, and rose petal. This wine is lusciously silky and inviting. Flavors of blackberry, raspberry, strawberry and huckleberry are supported by hints of spice and cedar. The smooth tannins and soft finish make this delightful wine easy to drink. This wine is as playful as it is complex.
This wine will pair beautifully with BBQ Chicken, ham or any type of picnic fare on a nice sunny day.
