The 2018 growing season got a relatively late start due to a cool and blessedly rainy spring. Summer temperatures remained moderate, with a brief and relatively mild heat spike at the end of July. Our harvest began 15 days later than in 2017, and proceeded at a slow and steady pace, affording us the luxury of picking at peak flavor development and relatively low Brix. Our last pick was on November 6, setting a record for our latest harvest. Yields were up relative to the last several years and the quality is outstanding.
The grapes for our Moscato are grown on our Estate St. Helena vineyard in a block adjoining the Napa River. We gently press the grapes and conduct a long, slow fermentation at a very low temperature to maintain the floral and tropical fruit flavors that are the hallmark of Moscato.
Bright, pale straw in color, this wine offers heavenly aromas of lychee, honeysuckle, jasmine, tuberose, white peach, orange blossom, and creme brulee. On the palate, it is beautifully textured, custardy and rich, with a note of vanilla bean.
Enjoy as an apertif or with foie gras, nuts and your favorite washed-rind cheese, such as Epoisses, or a lemon tartlet.
