The 2019 growing season was a roller coaster that kept us on our toes, but resulted in beautiful wines. Spring precipitation persisted through bloom and berry set, but the weather had little impact on our yields. As summer progressed, our typical heat spikes failed to appear, allowing berry flavors to develop slowly, and leading to one of our longest harvests on record. We picked at optimal ripeness and are thrilled with our young wines.
Our estate Black Glass Vineyard Zinfandel takes its name from the obsidian that surfaces in the vineyard after each rain. In the winery we treat our Zinfandel as gently as our Sangiovese. We ferment in open top tanks and gently punch down twice each day. When the fermentation is complete the wine matures in neutral French oak barrels.
The 2019 vintage of our estate Zinfandel shows the spicy, silky, seductive side of this variety. Standing out in the broad spectrum of floral and fruit flavors are black raspberry, floribunda rose petals, and chocolate-covered cherries, with hints of coffee, cinnamon, and black pepper. The wine is richly textured with a lingering finish.
This wine will pair beautifully with eggplant parmigiana, a hunk of pecorino romano with a crusty ciabatta, or a roast pork loin with a porcini mushroom reduction.
