2018 Sangiovese

Blend Composition | 100% Sangiovese
Appellation | Estate St. Helena Vineyard
Harvest Date | September 18
Finished pH | 3.81
Finished TA | 5.2 g/L
Alcohol by Volume | 14.1%

VINTAGE
The 2018 growing season got a relatively late start due to a cool and blessedly rainy Spring.  Summer temperatures remained moderate, with a brief and relatively mild heat spike at the end of July.  Our harvest began 15 days later than in 2017, and proceeded at a slow and steady pace, affording us the luxury of picking at peak flavor develeopment and relatively low Brix.  Our last pick was on November 6, setting a record for our latest harvest.  Yields were up relative to the last several years and the quality is outstanding.

WINEMAKING
We produce our Sangiovese from a variety of clonal selections, enhancing the complexity of the finished wine. In the winery we handle the fruit gently, destemming without crushing the berries. We adjust our cap management techniques—punchdowns and pumpovers—to get the desired structure and color without overextraction.

TASTING NOTES
Classic Sangiovese aromas of Bing Cherry, leather, and dried roses.  The wine is expansive on the palate, with a cornucopia of flavors including blackberry and pomegranate, with hints of dark chocolate and espresso.  It is mouth-coating and rich.  Though ready to enjoy now, it promises a long future to those with the patience to wait for it.

PAIRINGS
Try alongside your favorite salumi platter, paasta puttanesca, or a grilled double-cut porkchop.

WINEMAKING
Our estate Black Glass Vineyard Zinfandel takes its name from the obsidian that surfaces in the vineyard after each rain. In the winery we treat our Zinfandel as gently as our Sangiovese. We ferment in open top tanks and gently punch down twice each day. When the fermentation is complete the wine matures in neutral French oak barrels.

TASTING NOTES
Our Black Glass Zinfandel is back with a bang! With rich hues that pop and inviting aromatics, it is expansive on the palate, offering bold flavors and a spicy finish. Our vineyard site's signature black raspberry flavors are joined by cherry and violet and rose petal notes, as well as cocoa powder-dusted dark chocolate.

PAIRINGS
This wine will pair beautifully with eggplant parmigiana, a hunk of pecorino romano with a crusty ciabatta, or a roast pork loin with a porcini mushroom reduction.

WINEMAKING
The four varieties were hand-picked and fermented separately with gentle fermentation techniques resulting in wine of great depth and complexity.  We selected the finest barrels of each lot to create the Phenomenon blend.  The wine matured for 20 months in new and once-used French oak barrels before bottling.

TASTING NOTES
This wine is rich and sumptuous, with a satiny texture conveying flavors of blackberry, black cherry, and molten chocolate. The wine is brilliantly aromatic with an ever-evolving palette of rose and violet, freshly brewed espresso, and dark fruit. It is approachable now but will open up and offer more with time in the cellar.

Drinking window:  Enjoy now through 2032

PAIRINGS
This versatile wine would be wonderful alongside a butterflied leg of lamb, fettucine with walnut pesto, or pomegranate-braised short ribs.
